Acabo de recibir un mail de la Galería Toni Tapiès en Barcelona. Conocí a Celia del Diego en Arco cuando ví que tenían a Brouws en su galería (mmm...estaba flipando). Ella fué encantadora y estuvimos hablando del fotógrafo un buen rato.
Ahora me escribe para decirme que Jeff Brouws tendrá por fin su primera exposición en España. Se inaugurará el día 25 de Marzo y espero que aguante lo suficiente para poder verla cuando vaya a Barcelona.
La muestra incluye una selección de trabajos desde "Approaching Nowhere" (en mi opinión lo mejor que ha hecho Brouws junto con "Inside The Reptile Tent") y su último proyecto "After Trinity" sobre los campos de pruebas de bombas nucleares (este no me volvió loco).
Brouws es uno de los mejores fotógrafos norteamericanos de los últimos treinta años. Ha hecho de todo desde libros-souvenir a postales. Y merece su propio lugar dentro de la fotografía americana. Su luz, el momento que escoge para sus disparos y su control del encuadre a través de un cuadrado son realmente únicos. Top 10 sin duda.

I just got an email from Toni Tapiès Gallery in Barcelona. I met Celia del Diego in Arco when I saw they had Brouwse's pictures on their gallery. She was very nice and we talked about the photographer for a while. Now she writes me to tell me that Jeff Brouws will finally have his first exhibition in Spain. It will be opened on March the 25th and I hope it lasts enough so I can go to Barcelona to visit it.
The show includes works from "Approaching Nowhere" (in my opnion, Brouws's best work along with "Inside The Reptile Tent") and his last project "After Trinity" covering nuclear bombs test fields (didn't make me crazy).
Brouws is one of the best north american photographers from the last thirty years. He has done just about everything, from souvenir books to postcards. And he deserves his own place in photography. His light, the moment he chooses to shoot and his framing through the square are really unique. Top 10 without a doubt.

Conocí a François en el taller de Stephen Shore el verano pasado.
Todos estábamos emocionados por la suerte gigante de estar allí, recibiendo clases de uno de los auténticos mega maestros del medio. Pero yo pensé que, además, habíamos tenido mucha suerte con el nivelón del trabajo de los alumnos. Hace unos meses había estado en una clase maestra del master de Photoespaña (Universidad Europea de Madrid), cuando tuve la ultra suerte de recibir la invitación de Joel Sternfeld. Y lo cierto es que los trabajos que ví allí, no me parecieron interesantes. Así que, de primeras, tenía un poco de miedo acerca de qué esperar. Pero después de unas horas en el taller de Shore lo único que me asustaba era que a los demás no les gustase mi trabajo. Pero sí les gustó, o eso dijeron!
Realmente creo que fuimos muy suertudos. Stephen Shore seleccionó los portfolios personalmente y tuvo algo que ver.
Pasamos cuatro días maravillosos, parlando sobre fotografía y tomando unas cuantas cervezas...

El trabajo de François es un gustazo para el ojo. Me dijo que está preparando un nuevo proyecto de moda y no puedo esperar para verlo..

I met François in Stephen Shore's workshop last summer.
Everyone felt really lucky that we were recieveing classes from one of the authentic masters of the medium. But I also thought that we were very lucky because the quality of the student's work was really impressive. I'd been to the Photoespaña master class (Universidad Europea de Madrid), kindly invited by Joel Sternfeld, and the works I saw there were just not interesting to me. So I was scared at first about what to expect. But then, after a few hours in Shore's workshop I was only scared about the others not liking my work. But they did, or so they said!. I really think we were very lucky. Stephen Shore had selected the portfolios personally and that probably had something to do with it. We had the greatest four days in Madrid, talking about photography and drinking beer..

François's work is an absolute delight to the eye. He told me he's making a fashion project at the moment and I can't wait to see it!

De vez en cuando me vuelvo a sorprender con discos en la estantería, algunos que ni siquiera recordaba y con unas portadas encantadoras.

Every now and then I get the surprise of finding records in the shelve with some great artwork which I didn't even remember in some cases.

La gloriosa barba de Alan Moore es entrevistada en Vice Magazine. Y la conversación es realmente enriquecedora. Él es un genio, espero que lo sepas. Y la verdad es que Vice, con todo lo nervioso que me pone, lleva 5 números en los que han entrevistado a personajes alucinantes, y a varios de mis artistas favoritos como Stephen Shore, Werner Herzog, Dario Argento, Lemmy...

Alan Moore's glorious beard is interviewed in Vice Magazine. And the conversation is really enriching. He's a genius, I hope you know that. And the truth is that Vice Mag, although it has so many things that make me really nervous, its been having so many incredible characters interviewed for the last 5 numbers, favorite artists of mine like Stephen Shore, Werner Herzog, Dario Argento, Lemmy...

Toma!! Menuda presentación de fanzine. El Costello estaba hasta la banderola. Todos los convocados eran gente maravillosa. Mirases donde mirases había alguien alucinante para hablar, bailar o brincar haciendo el pino puente sobre una torre humana. Y los conciertos sobre la cima!

Fue un super placer pinchar. Y más aún, poder ver el fanzine ya terminado.

Yes!! What a great premier party we had!. Costello Bar was so loaded. Everyone in there was fantastic. You could look anywhere and there would be someone amazing to talk to, dance or make pirouettes on human towers. And the shows where so over the top of the hill.

It was an extra pleasure to play records there. And even more, to see the finished fanzine.

Envié unos escaneados de mis últimas fotos a una pelirroja y sorprendente fuente de ingenio. Cañero llenó de alucinantes visitantes las tres escenas enviadas y conseguimos una secuencia en la que la fotografía y el dibujo se invaden en imágenes inundadas de jolgorio.

Se presentará aquí, junto con el resto de piezas que conformarán el nº0 del fanzine "Háztelo Tu Mismo", el
próximo Sábado.

I sent some scans of my last pictures to a surprising red-haired fountain of ingenuity. Cañero filled the three scenes with amazing visitors and we got a sequence in which photography and drawing invade each other in full of revelry images.

It will be presented here, with the rest of works united under nº0 of the "Háztelo Tu Mismo" fanzine, next Saturday.
